PLUS is designed to prepare current and future educational, community, and civic leaders in the Bay Area region to overcome years of isolation and develop collaborative, mutually beneficial policies and practices. The Initiative aims to facilitate comprehensive systems-change, rather than simply adding programs to existing institutional and organizational structures.

PLUS is an interdepartmental partnership between CC&S, UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education, and the Haas School of Business Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership. This three-year Initiative is sponsored by the Walter and Elise Haas fund, the Stuart Foundation, and the national BEST (Building Educational Success Together) Collaborative.

Key components of this initiative include:

  • A series of leadership institutes and forums on integrated policies and practices  between civic and educational institutions and organizations
  • Curriculum modules for education and city planning professional preparation and induction programs
  • Graduate Fellows Program that supports and enhances the work of both graduate students and PLUS city teams
  • Web-based resources for community mapping and community asset identification
  • Research/assessment support for PLUS Team Leaders

PLUS Leadership Institutes
PLUS provides space for civic and educational leaders to further develop and expand collaborative initiatives. Through the year long PLUS Leadership Institutes, CC&S staff and select groups of local PLUS City-School Teams (comprised of civic, educational, and community leaders in six Bay Area cities) develop, implement, and document mutually beneficial city-school programs, policies, and practices.
