Y-PLAN wins University of California Chancellor’s Award, 2005
Chancellor's Dissertation Award
Jeff Vincent, co-founder of the Center for Cities & Schools, wins the UC Berkeley Chancellor's Dissertation Award for his research, “Planning and Siting New Public Schools in the Context of Community Development: The California Experience,” 2005. Thirteen fellowships were awarded for the 2005–2006 academic year. These fellowships, as with all University fellowships, reward academic excellence. Nominations are made on the basis of demonstrated ability to complete high quality research.
Seminar Teacher of the Year, UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning
Deborah McKoy, Director of the Center for Cities & Schools, wins the annual teaching award, “Seminar Teacher of the Year,” in the Department of City and Regional Planning, 2004.
Architectural Foundation of San Francisco Foundation Award
Y-PLAN wins Architectural Foundation of San Francisco Foundation’s Award for engaging youth in the built environment, 2003.
Chancellor’s Award for Community – University Partnerships
Y-PLAN wins University of California Chancellor’s Award for Community – University Partnerships, 2001.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Y-PLAN course in UC Berkeley’s Department of City and Regional Planning became national model for engaging youth in community revitalization by HUD’s HOPE VI national office in 37 cities nationwide holding three national leadership training conferences.
  • Six Bay Area community plans have been created through Y-PLAN by youth & UCB mentors for community organizations.
  • More than 50 UC Berkeley students have entered the education, policy, planning and other workforces with unique understanding of the intersection between schools and community development by taking part in the courses affiliated with the Center for Cities & Schools.
  • Numerous UC Berkeley graduate students have built on the work of the Center for Cities & Schools in their master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.
